This past Saturday, October 17, 2009, the 14th South American Sumo Tournament and the 2nd Feminine Sumo Tournament, was held in Buenos Aires, Argetina. Among the participants were wrestlers from Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brasil and Argentina.
I photographed the event for Sumo Amateur Argentino and posted the photos to Flickr. Personally, I used the event to take a series of portraits, along the style of the previous Los Pibes project. Those will be uploaded in the next few days.
So, in no particular order… Enjoy the action.

More images of the Sumo Amateur Argentino group. This past Saturday, August 29th, they hosted a fundraising demonstration. The upcoming 14º Torneo Sudamericano de Sumo will be held October 17th in Buenos Aires.
I understand they are always looking for new converts and especially women. There are currently two women on the team, but they need a minimum of three to compete. Come on, give them a call!

Sumo Amateur Argentino is a group of Argentines gathering each Saturday to practice and perfect the art of sumo wrestling. It is not something you’d immediately call to mind when you think of traveling to Argentina. In the land of beef, tango, gauchos and glaciers there is also a dedication to a sport originating in Japan.
The upcoming 14º Torneo Sudamericano de Sumo (October 17, 2009) will be again a showcase for sumo in South America with South American sumo powerhouses such as Paraguay and Brasil expected to attend.
